Sor Veronica Reliquary
Symbols and their meanings continue to evolve with cultural changes. This reliquary examines the personal mythology of my partner's late mother, Maria Veronica Hannel. Her story as a nun from Mazamitla, Mexico who, through a strange series of events, came to America and later became a psychologist is illustrated by the lightning and landscape, calf, deer, and scorpion. I wanted to honor her and house meaningful personal objects. Her strength, intuition, and drive were reminiscent of the famous feminist, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, who also inspired this piece. At the back of the work there is a place to insert a candle and the stars have been punched out to allow light to shine through.
"No estudio para saber más, sino para ignorar menos."
